282,169 babies

Miscarriages are defined as the loss of the embryo, that is, before 20 weeks development. It’s unknown what the miscarriage rate is, as they may go unnoticed or unreported. It’s estimated to be something like 25% of all conceptions, with most of the risk in the first six weeks. (W)

The following are babyloss statistics. I’ve gotten these wrong before, so I looked them up. These are for Australia in 2006.

The foetal death or stillbirth rate was 1 in 135 births.

The neonatal death rate (up to 28 days after birth) was 1 in 333 live births.

The total perinatal death rate (foetal + neonatal) was 1 in 97 births. (AIHW)

The infant death rate (up to 1 year after birth) was 1 in 213 live births. (ABS)

This is the context we live in.
