Never Again
Italy protected Jews in World War Two, including non-Italian Jews. But they still built concentration camps. In Europe they concentrated Yugoslavians (but not Yugoslov Jews).
Far worse, Italy invaded Ethiopia in 1935. They sprayed illegal poison gas from the sky. They turned the whole country into a concentration camp. Ethiopia and Italy were both members of the League of Nations, where Ethiopia’s Emperor Haile Selassie warned other countries: “It is us today. It will be you tomorrow.” Germany and and Britain and Japan and France recognised Italy’s sovereignty over Ethiopia. It wasn’t until the Italian surrender in 1943 that Ethiopia was free again. A million Ethiopians were killed (including Ethiopian Jews).
I heard of the Ethiopian holocaust via MaNishtana during International Blog Against Racism Week. I had never before heard of these atrocities, even when I was reading about Italy and the Holocaust. The above (and what else?) are still hard to find out about. Few want to remember.
Never again… never what again?
