Books by women

Eve’s Alexandria is a group book blog by Esther, Nic and Victoria. I found it via this excellent review by Victoria and Nic of M John Harrison’s Nova Swing. Nic and Victoria recently posted reviews of their 2008 reading.

They note how many books by women they’ve read. Roughly a third of Nic’s books read are by women. Roughly half of Victoria’s are by women. I decided to go back to my reading list and see how many were by women, but I knew the number would be low.

In five years I’ve read 28 books by women, or 8% of my total books read. That’s 25 novels, 1 comic, 1 non-fiction book, and 1 short story collection. Recurring authors are Kate Orman (two novels), Gwyneth Jones (four novels) and Ursula K Le Guin (seven).
