Jorge Luis Borges (redux)
Thursday the 11th of September 2003
An archived copy of ‘Pierre Menard, Author of Don Quixote‘. (Don’t linger on the opening paragraphs and lengthy list, the story proper starts after that.) I dug this up to share, because I think it sheds some light on Strange Little Girls, a cover album in which Tori Amos sings songs written in a male voice by men. Borges, writing in 1941, does a better job than me, writing in 2001, of reviewing why she would do that. Though Borges would no doubt note - and Barth would agree - that it would be more heroic for her to write one song about a woman covering male songs.
